What is Next...

I have begun to look into Kentucky and Tennessee as my next locations for the Humble Homeless Project. I have not decided which city among the states yet, but for Kentucky it is between Lexington and Louisville, as for Tennessee the options are Memphis and Nashville. I look forward to continuing the Humble Homeless Project, although I have not put a time for my next voyage seeing that I will make it fit around my whatever job I am blessed to begin within the next few months, as I am on the job hunt.

I would like to add some type of campaign with my next homeless trip to have an opportunity to raise money and clothing for the homeless shelters within the state I travel to. As well as raise awareness with hopes that individuals within the state will also volunteer at their local homeless shelters.

I am still trying to gain the information and resources needed to make Humble Homeless Project into a non for profit organization.

I cannot wait until my next trip!

  1. I found your blog today. I, too have started a blog entitled homelessnessindy.blogspot.com. I use pc from library or wherever I can. I have been homeless for 2.5 yrs. in Indianapolis. I would love for you to see my blog, but I can't figure out why it is not showing up on the web. I have a personal diary, a 'the way it is' page, a 'pay it forward' page and other posts, outlinging my experience and feelings as a homeless person. My email is tkmercer50@yahoo. It is ironic in that when I was in college, I put serious consideration into living on the street for a week to gather information from the homeless and look for resources and draw conclusions. Little did I know back then that I would eventually become one of them. Pls email if you care to speak to me about my experience or share your own. Kudos for the work you are doing. Most don't care about the homeless population. I hope to hear from you. Perhaps I can help. Remember there are the 'hidden homeless' who couch surf and may not necessarily be living hour after hour directly on the street. Good luck, be safe and write back if you can. After over 2 years of this, I am hopeless.

    1. Hello Tammera,
I want you to know how I honored I am that you took time to share some of your story with me. I lived homeless in downtown Indy to not only gain the experience but also spread the awarenesss, however I can not begin to imagine 2.5 years living in the condition I did for a week. I am praying for you and your son and only hope for the best. Anyway I am able to help, I would love to. I will follow your blog as well.
      -Please keep in touch!

  2. I know how to get a 501 C3 from IRS as a non profit org. I did it back in 2002, started a non profit called PEER, getting jobs for folks coming back to the community from prison. I wrote grants and got one 5000. grant from Indianapolis Foundation. Eventually, I had to close program. My children were still at home and no one wanted to contribute to the program. I can tell you how to get the non profit status.
I also marketed my program, getting a front page story in Business section of Indpls. Star.
    Stay safe!

  4. Darius, I have been homeless for 2 and a half years, not 2 to 5 years...that is my bad. I guess 2.5 looked ambiguous. Sorry.

  5. When I read your blog, my eyes began to water because even though ur experience was an experiment, mine was real life...Thanks for brining awareness to the issue. I found myself homeless after being laid off. I slept in my car for almost 4 months. The days were long and the nights were COLD!! But, by the grace of God I survived!! You have a good heart!! God can use you to help MANY!!

  7. If you're ever back in Chicago and are aware of any of the good people that you've meet in the shelter that may suffer from a mental illness such as depression or bipolar disorder, please respond back to me and refer them to the company I work for, we provide community Housing and assist them towards total independence. I can provide more information if you're interested.
